Orellán Viewpoint

One of the excuses to visit the surroundings of Médulas-Orellán and of course, that you should not miss.

The Orellán viewpoint is at about 10 minutes by car, from our rural accomodation and if you want, you can go walking, you´ll enjoy it.

A spectacle for the eyes and a thank for the body, from its wooden platform you can see the Roman mining exploitation, engineering work of the Roman Empire, or discover its interior through its galleries, known as the Orellán galleries, a mining operation totally preserved to visit.

And you can also enjoy the natural valley down or have a walk towards Médulas.

What to see and when to visit Las Médulas?

Now it´s time to approach and feel the exteriors in situ of the largest open pit mine from Roman times and declared a World Heritage Site.

Reddish pinacles emerged by the demolition of the action of water- ruina montium-, sheltered by long-lived chestnut trees, oaks or wild cherry trees, authentic indicators during your visits to Las Médulas, from the beginning of April until the end of autumn. If you are looking for diversity of colors, autumn is ideal, if you are looking to get energy, spring should be your date. If you want to guarantee good weather, come in summer.

We advise you to visit first the Archeological Museum, then continue to the Cuevona and the Encantada. Let also some time to do a route in Médulas, tour some of the Roman canals or visit villages around: Priaranza, Puente Domingo Flórez..

It is said that in Roman times when they visited our Bercian region, in the village of Lago de Carucedo there was the intrepid nymph Carissia and that she had fallen in love with the Roman General Tito Carissio, but the Roman mentality discouraged such a relationship.

And the undine, not being reciprocated and feeling despised, fall into such depression that her shed tears by that impossible love gave rise to the immense Lake of Carucedo.
